This week’s Bible reading in the Jewish world is called “Chukat” and contains some of the Bibles most unusual commandments. Specifically it dives into the purification ceremony through the red heifer ashes, a system so complex and baffling that according to legend, even King Solomon in all his wisdom could not understand.
So what do we do with Words from God that we don’t understand? It is tempting only to obey what we agree with and what makes sense to us, conveniently ignoring the things which we don’t understand. But whether we understand the why’s and wherefore’s or not, I believe God is expecting us to obey Him.
Is God calling you to do something which you don’t understand? Is He telling you to do something which doesn’t make sense? May I challenge you to also obey Him in these moments. And one day, for sure, He will show us the full meaning of his Word. But for now, these hard to understand Words are a test of our obedience and commitment to follow our God and King.
