Have you ever realised after the fact that God had been speaking to you all along?
The other day, a simple thought crossed my mind: “Go and help your wife with the cooking.” I dismissed it almost immediately and carried on with my work, never considering that it might have been the Holy Spirit prompting me.
A short while later, my wife had a major mishap in the kitchen and was understandably quite upset.
As I reflected on what had happened, I asked myself, Why didn’t I recognise God’s voice this time? I’ve heard His leading before, so what was different?
It felt as though I had become spiritually hard of hearing.
As I prayed about it, I was reminded that in Biblical Hebrew, the words “to hear” (or listen) and “to obey” are closely connected. True listening isn’t just about recognising words—it’s about responding to them. Those who listen well are those who obey.
Then the Holy Spirit gently highlighted something in my own life. There was an area where I had been resisting His instruction and choosing my own way instead. I realised that my unwillingness to obey in one area had dulled my sensitivity to His voice in another.
That was a sobering lesson.
