Modern society simplifies a husband’s role to being that of simply loving his wife, but by Biblical definition a husband is also called to lead.
One of the most common forms of the Hebrew word ‘husband’ used in the Bible carries the meaning of a leader or ruler with authority. This means that, by definition, from the very moment a man becomes a husband, he is a leader.
Now being a husband requires a man to daily take steps to fill his role. For example, he should daily be seeking to express love to his wife, even sacrificially when he doesn’t feel like it, following the example of Jesus (Eph. 5:25). But just as importantly, the husband needs to daily, through depending on the Lord, guide his home in God’s ways. He needs to find his place, both as a leader and as a lover, and only as these two are combined, will our homes be filled with God’s peace and order in its fullness.
