Surprised by the Prophetic

Prophetic ministry has been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately, with the exposure of a minister deceiving with false prophetic words based on knowledge about people that he had gleaned from facebook.
Sadly such deception can hinder people from appreciating and receiving the blessing of true prophetic ministry.
Recently we were stunned by an unexpected prophetic word through our ministry. Sara and I noticed a man in our audience who looked like he strongly opposed our message, sitting with his arms crossed rolling his eyes.
As soon as the service was over this man came up to talk, and I was bracing myself for a confrontation. “What you said today was so relevant for my situation” he said.
He went on to describe three specific issues in his life that were stunningly similar to the three specific testimonies I had shared that day. I had shared testimonies about addiction, family issues and forgiveness towards a certain family member – and it turned out he was facing the exact same addiction, family issues and a problem with the exact same member of his family.
“Only God Himself could have made you share those exact stories today” he exclaimed as he sought prayer and further help.
1 Cor 14:25 describes how true prophetic words can convince an outsider who walks in that “God is truly in your midst” – and this is exactly what happened in this situation.
In wake of the scandals coming out of America, let us not “throw out the baby with the bath water” when it comes to the prophetic movement. We need to be discerning, and genuine issues need to be addressed. But let us also understand and expect that God can and will use His people today to deliver prophetic words. And sometimes those prophetic words will come in the most unexpected ways.
