What is the weekly torah portion and why do I read it?

Jewish communities around the world follow a cycle of weekly readings (called portions) from the 5 books of Moses in order to complete reading it over the course of a year.
Why do I read it you may ask? No, I’m not trying to be Jewish. I have however found each portion to be amazingly prophetic to my daily life, family and ministry if I am willing to scratch beneath the surface and dig a bit deeper into its meanings with the help of rabbinic insights and hebrew word meanings.
Above all else, I read the Torah portions because (1) it is God’s word and (2) it is a foundational part of Scripture that is sadly neglected by much of Christianity.
