Running out of Names? What kind of parent calls his child “Name?”. Well that is exactly what Noah called his son Shem (meaning name). This strange choice of name has a prophetic significance in our world today.
The Jewish people are from Shem, and the hatred of them is called anti-Semitism – in other words being opposed to the “Name”.
At its root, the hatred of the Jew is hatred of God who is often called “haShem” (the Name in hebrew)
Curiously, the very same forces that are united against Israel are also united in their hostility to the followers of Jesus. Why is this? It is because we too carry His Name. Jesus told us that all men will hate us “for His Name’s sake”.
Just as we are today witnessing a surge of anti-Semitism arising through the nations, so it is only a matter of time before we will see a similar anti-Christian wave take hold.
How do we respond? I think the only answer is found in the words of Jesus: “Love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you”.
Ultimately, their hatred is not towards us, nor towards Israel, but towards God. And as we pray for them, God can have mercy on some, turning them away from their hatred to a revelation of the one true God.
